  • Hey all you quilters out there, have you heard of a block swap? Have you ever participated in a quilt block swap? We'd all rather be quilting now wouldn't we? If you want to know what a block swap is read on.

Quilters from the newest to the most experienced, from the youngest to the oldest will tell you 'block swapping' is a favorite activity among them. Swapping is an ingenious way to cleverly accomplish obtaining a variety of fabric variations in a completed block from those participating. A block swap can be organized in a variety of ways. When you volunteer to be the organizer you also get to make the choices as to how the swap will work. After making those decisions your next task is to gather a group of committed quilters that are willing to participate. While looking for possible block patterns you can use the WRBQ, Inc. online quilt shop directory to view various quilt shops without leaving your home.

Before enlisting participants, as the organizer you need to make some preliminary decisions like:

What number of participants you are looking for? Will you choose a standard block size? Do you want to agree on a common fabric for all to incorporate? What is the quilt block shop start date? When will this swap be finished? Are you utilizing a common theme? Will using the exact block pattern be required? Do you want to begin the exchange by meeting as a group? Shall finished blocks be mailed to the organizer or will a gathering to exchange be in order? Does the group want to make a charity quilt by each providing an extra block?

After the group is chosen get started by calling a meeting, sending the written directions and expectations by e-mail or US Postal Service. It's sounding like a party, a group of quilting friends, visiting and food. Anyone that is unsure of themselves or the commitment this quilt block swap entails will now be able to make an educated decision regarding participating. Any questions will be answered, plans are made for the exchange and all are eager to get started on the adventure ahead.

For me, one of most important functions of a quilt block swap is to have fun. You each should most certainly derive some fun from the project. For instance, get a carload of other participants, grab your Showtime Quilters Guide & Directory published by WRBQ, Inc. and head to a few of the quilt shops listed in the regional quilt shop directory. Make sure you leave time for lunch and what a day of enjoyment you can have.

A service oriented twist can be thrown into the mix by having each participant make and donate an extra block. Put those blocks together into a quilt and there are a variety of organizations that would be happy to accept this gift of time and love for someone in need. Another idea might be to contact a quilt shop you have found in your quilt shop directory, see if they are willing to display the work of art and sell raffle tickets. The money would then be donated to a worthy organization. I'm sure everyone participating will enjoy the satisfaction and joy this act of kindness brings. It can be a nice element of quilt block swapping.
